Vincent Poon :: Medina

Medina (the old city) is a distinct city section found in many North African cities. It is typically walled, with many narrow and maze-like streets. They were designed to confuse and slow down invaders (and tourists alike) because of how narrow and winding the alleys were.

A trip to a North African city is never complete if you don't go there to get lost or to haggle with the local merchants. Although not as lively as Marrakesh's and not as ancient or as massive as Fes', it still has its own unique character there.

Medersa Slimania, 1754, used to be a Quranic school for girls, now houses the association of former students
and it was opened! Nice Architecture!
The courtyard of the medersa. Each green door led to a small classroom. The well in the middle was really, really tiny.
Next we were persuaded into a shop called 'La Maison D'Orient'. Besides being a carpet shop, it had on display some interesting stuffs

This was also in the shop. I believe once this was the bedroom of a rich man
The carpets they sell
Not sure if these were for sale or for showcase
After climbing a few flights of stairs (and visited a few rooms), we climbed to the roof of the shop

After climbing a few flights of stairs (and visited a few rooms), we climbed to the roof of the shop
The roof was nicely designed with some arches in tiles and mosaics, these kind of roofs seems quite common in Tunisia
The purpose of getting here (yes we paid for it) was for the view of the Great Mosque. Excellent view!
