Vincent Poon :: Tunis

Tunis was the first and the last stop of my trip. It was the capital and also the commercial centre of Tunisia. We spent a few days here exploring the old Medina, the ancient Carthage and most of all, the impressive Bardo Museum. If you have only got a day in Tunis, then Bardo is definitely the place to go!

The sun was setting but we could not find a good place to view the sunset
The purpose of getting here (yes we paid for it) was for the view of the Great Mosque. Excellent view!
The centre piece of the whole museum - the Carthage Room
Album: Carthage

Carthage was the centre of the Carthaginian civilization founded by the Phoenicians in 8th century BC. After 3 Punic Wars, Carthage was finally destroyed and occupied by the Romans. Nowadays it is not hard to find these Roman ruins around the place. In fact there were so many which we could only afford to see a selective few, and amongst them the Antonine Baths was definitely the best!

Album: Sidi Bou Said

With the narrow, cobbled streets and the white and blue houses, people often compare this little cliff-top village to the Greek islands. Well, if you really think that  either you have never been to Greece (which I highly recommend you to do so!) or that I am missing something here...

Having said that it is still quite a unique place in Tunisia and is worth a visit if you are visiting Carthage anyway.

Album: Medina

Medina (the old city) is a distinct city section found in many North African cities. It is typically walled, with many narrow and maze-like streets. They were designed to confuse and slow down invaders (and tourists alike) because of how narrow and winding the alleys were.

A trip to a North African city is never complete if you don't go there to get lost or to haggle with the local merchants. Although not as lively as Marrakesh's and not as ancient or as massive as Fes', it still has its own unique character there.

Album: Bardo Museum

Bardo houses a large collection of Roman mosaics gathered around Tunisia and is considered to be one of the best in the world. (used to be the largest too until Turkey's Zeugma Mosaic Museum opened a few years ago)

Beside the vast mosaics collection, the museum itself was converted from a former palace and was itself a true masterpiece.

The only living human being we found initially were the policemen
First room we were given... everything looked fine, except that the windows could not be locked...
Album: Ville Nouvelle

If Medina is the old city then this part is the new city of Tunis... here we (tried to) hunt for good restaurants as well as experienced first hand on what it was like to be waking up in a city where you met more cops than citizens during the festival of Eid al-Adha.

Album: Hotel Carlton

Hotel Carlton was the 3* hotel we stayed in Tunis. It was newly refurbished from a 1926 vintage building and was centrally located. The price was reasonable and if you would be going out most of the time then I think this hotel is not a bad option!
