Vincent Poon :: Tunisia 2014
18th Sep - 4th Oct

Visited Sousse, Kairouan, Chebika, Tamerza, Nefta, Douz, Ksar Ghilane, Chenini, Matmata, El-Jem, Monastir, Port El-Kanatoui, Hammamet, Nabeul, Djerba Island and Tunis

Another North African country. If you have not been to Morocco, then I suggest you to go there first as there is more culture, history and landscape to see over there. Nevertheless, if you want sun & sea, star wars and mosaics, then Tunisia will definitely be your choice!

We got there early in the morning, so virtually no one else was there (except one or two merchants), it was quite amazing the props were still there given that no one really maintained them any more.
There were two guardians guarding the entrance
Boujaffar Beach
This was the place where Habib Bourguiba (first Tunisian president) and his family was buried
Album: The Jeep Safari Triology

A 3d2n desert safari trip. Tunisian desert was not the main dish, Star Wars was. Tunisia had many sites where the Star Wars movies were shot. However this trip was not easy.... unexpected delay, hot temperature, getting lost and car failures were just a few of them.... still I think it was definitely worthwhile if you ever go to Tunisia

Album: El Jem

Having missed out El Jem in the previous Desert Safari tour, we have decided to set aside another day to visit this old Roman Town, Thysdrus as it was called back then and was one of the richest towns in Roman Africa. The amphitheatre is enormous and well-preserved; and its musuem contianing a large collection of mosaics excavated from the houses nearby. El Jem is definitely a place not to be missed if you ever visit Tunisia.

Album: Sousse

Sousse, the first and also the longest place we stayed in Tunisia. It is the 3rd largest city in Tunisia and used to attract many tourists each year. Sadly, its days were gone and now most people flocked to Port el-Kantoui or Hammamet. We chose here only because of its close proximity to places like Kaiouran, El-Jem and Monastir.

Album: Monastir

We went all the way to Monastir just to see the Ribat, which was the filming location of 'The Life of Brian'. The weather was bad at the beginning but it seems we had some good luck and the sun came out when we arrived. Alas, the luck did not last when we realized the Ribat was STILL under renovation (for years now).. Having no choice we decided to visit the mausoleum next door which turned out to be just as impressive..

Like all tourist ports in Tunisia, pirate boats were found everywhere
As we left the medina we saw the other landmark of the city - Orange Monument
Not only was the boat like floating in the sky, but the sky and the sea were like perfect reflection of themselves
The purpose of getting here (yes we paid for it) was for the view of the Great Mosque. Excellent view!
Album: Port El-Kantaoui

Many tourists who once stayed in Sousse now choose to stay in Port el-Kantaoui (PEK) which is only 10 minutes away. The beaches, as well as the hotels were much nicer around here. The only place of interest is the marina here if your hotel does not entertain you enough.

Album: Cap Bon - Hammamet & Nabeul

Hammamet is now the most popular place for the European tourists as Sousse faded out. In reality the place was ideal for resorts and the only reason why we went was to have a taste of the Cap Bon Peninsula, the so-called "Tunisia's back garden". Sadly we could not find any local tour on this so at the end we went to Nabeul instead.

Album: Djerba Island

According to the Greek legend, Djerba is the Land of the Lotus-Eaters, where Ulysses paused in the course of his odyssey and had a lot of troubles persuading his crew to get back on board as they did not want to leave this island of dreams. Today we are also going to this island of dreams, and yes, we did not want to leave too...

Album: Tunis

Tunis was the first and the last stop of my trip. It was the capital and also the commercial centre of Tunisia. We spent a few days here exploring the old Medina, the ancient Carthage and most of all, the impressive Bardo Museum. If you have only got a day in Tunis, then Bardo is definitely the place to go!

After a long delay, the bus finally took us to this plane... another propeller plane!
Album: Everything about flying...and waiting and eating and yes, more flying....

This album is all about our flying experiences to and from Tunisia as well as the domestic journeys between Tunis and Djerba.(Yep, ATR72!!!).As expected, the airports were no thrills and delays were expected. The last day was almost ruined by the public holiday with virtually no transportation to the airport, plus heavy rain that grounded all the flights. Luckily at the end we got back home in one piece!

Album: Doors of Tunisia

If you have been around Tunisia long enough, you would have noticed something about their unique door designs. These Doors are of different shapes, colours, inscriptions, decorations and patterns, regardless of whether they belong to the homes of the rich or the poor... and it was defintely not easy to find two identical ones...
