Vincent Poon :: Monastir

We went all the way to Monastir just to see the Ribat, which was the filming location of 'The Life of Brian'. The weather was bad at the beginning but it seems we had some good luck and the sun came out when we arrived. Alas, the luck did not last when we realized the Ribat was STILL under renovation (for years now).. Having no choice we decided to visit the mausoleum next door which turned out to be just as impressive..

To get to Monastir, we took the 'metro', which is more like a regional train. This was the Bab Jedid station in Sousse
Interesting mosaic patterns on the platform
Compared to the trains to El-Jem, these trains were a lot frequent (every 45 min)
and the inside compartment was a lot cleaner too...

We boarded the train and soon enough someone told us we were on the wrong train, so we got out and waited in the other platform...
After half an hour's journey, we finally arrived in Monastir
After a short walk from the train station, we arrived Bab el-Gharbi, which is the entrance to the medina
Passing through Bab el-Gharbi, we soon reached the heart of the medina - Place du 3 Septembre 1934

This is the way where we came from
The medina here is of a much smaller scale than Sousse or other cities in Tunisia.
You can't miss the beautiful Bourguiba Mosque on the way to the sea front.
Built in 1963, the Bourguiba mosque can house 1000 worshippers.
