Vincent Poon :: Amman (11-13 Sep)

Amman is hilly with its over seven major jebels (hills) and therefore my primary transport was the fairly cheap taxi... Yes! that means not much exploration on foot!

Still managed to check out some of the major sites... though a disappointment that no one knew where the Royal Automobile Museum was, got to pay a visit after watching Indiana Jones and the last crusade!

Temple of Hercules.
World's tallest free-standing flagpole...127m high!
The pillar-less prayer hall can host 7000 worshippers
Album: Citadel

Situated on the highest hill in Amman (850m above sea) this is more like a ruins site than a citadel. Still it offers some impressive sights like the Temple of Hercules and the Umayyad Palace, with a bonus spectacular view of Amman.

Album: Amman City

The city itself.. not much captured as most of the time I was on taxi... just a glimpse of what the city has...

Album: King Abdullah Mosque
A very modern mosque built in 1989 by King Hussein for King Abdullah. The only mosque in Amman which I can go inside. A fine example of modern day Islamic architecture (compared to those ancient ones I saw before in Egypt)

Album: Roman Theatre of Philadelphia

A very well preserved and certainly one of the highlights of Amman. This Roman Theatre is large enough to host 6k people, and surprisingly not many tourists and hawkers roam about the place so I managed to get some peace and tranquility while I enjoyed my time there!
