Vincent Poon :: Sleeping Train (23rd - 24th Apr 2007)
When I first heard of the sleeping train, the image of the Orient Express first came to my mind. "...You have your own wash basin, all your meals are served and you could just relax and sleep peacefully while our trains take you to the destination...."

In reality, I got onto a train that the exterior looked like it would take me to the concentration camp; a train steward that looked like a Mafia hitman; and meals and water that looked like I was on rations. For 80 USD, I could get myself a plane ticket and a nice hotel room instead.

Platform 1 of Luxor train station. There are no sign boards and all verbal annoucements are made in Arabic. The trains have no train numbers at the front. To make the matters worse, the trains are not on-time and they like to add more unscheduled trains and the sleeping train didn't look like a sleeping train at all! i.e. 101% that you will get on the wrong train!
Corridors inside a typical carriage. The whole sleeping train has only got cabins. There are curtains for the windows on the corridors. So far so good..
As sharing is not allowed, I have the whole cabin for myself! Before the bed is put down. there is just room for 2 people to sit inside this cabin.
Opening the "cupboard" in front of the seats you would see the wash basin and the "not-so-clean" flannels. The brown board on the left is the "cupboard" door, it will slam on your head at any moment while using the basin.

Behind the mysterious green curtain is a VERY shallow "wardrobe" for hanging your clothes. Basically you can't pull back the curtain after you have hung something there.
Water is the essence of life.. But look at the flow rate of this tap! It was amazing how I could actually brush my teeth with that!
Behind the door is the mirror. Above is a compartment to put your luggages (if you can lift that far up without injuring your back) and the pillows.
This detachable wooden board is the table for your meals. (For the meals, check my food album) Another one is lying on the floor. The water basin cupboard is closed at the moment. The bin's door will fling open at any minute.

After the dinner, the train steward will come and open up the bed for you. Two beds, one above the other. With both beds opened you basically can't really move inside your "room"
The shared toilet. There are two for each carriage. However, my cabin's door can only be locked inside, therefore you have to carry your valuables with you all the time whenever you visit here.
This is the exterior of the sleeping train, shocking, heh?
