Vincent Poon :: Coptic Cairo (18th Apr 2007)
Coptic Cairo is the modern name for the oldest part of the city and also is a haven of quiet, narrow lanes and ancient holy places. Today, besides the tourists, the Coptic Christians (Greek Orthodox) still come here to worship and say prayers.

I am surprised to find an active non-islamic area in an Islamic country but I am even more surprised to find their St. George is also killing Western Dragons here...and I originally thought St. George kills dragon in England only.... well it seems that he must be a worldwide consultant who travelled as far as to the Middle East to kill dragons.

The pulpit is made of marble and dating from the 11th century. It rests on 13 columns representing Christ and the 12 disciples.
One of the 13 pillars supporting the pulpit is darker than the rest, which is said to symbolise Judas. (The leftmost one next to the stairs)
The pulpit is only used in palm sunday. The facade is carved with a design showing a shell and a cross on stairs, representing the Resurrection of Christ.
The centre sanctuary screen is dedicated to Virgin Mary. The center of these 7 icons depicts Christ, on His throne. To his right is the Virgin Mary, the Archangle Gabriel and Saint Peter, while to his left are John the Baptist, the Archangle Michael and Saint Paul.

A cut out on the floor revealing the Water Gate below. Don't worry, I couldn't see a thing too... except that it is actually quite deep down there!
Met a group of HK students.. asked one of them to take a photo of me.. He thought that it would be stylish to take it like this!
The round Church of St. George is built on top of one of the two Roman towers. The "compass" on top of the tower is a dragon.
